Singles, Stress & Burnout

Posted by Fern on May 12, 2008 at 07:47:47:

In response to the most recent devotional, we received the following comments from someone:

I have reached a point where I realise that I have too much on my plate (particularly at Church, being busy for the Lord) and feel completely shattered - this isn't something that has suddenly come on, but has accumulated over time. It even reached a point where I have recently taken on a hobby to have some 'me time' and then feeling guilty because it is outside the Church. Because of this feeling of guilt, and after feeling exhausted even after taking some leave, I realised I needed to do something about it before I became incapable of doing ANYTHING.

I read something on the internet saying that some study had been done (In the USA - I think) that had revealed that one of the 'groups' especially prone to burn-out were single people.

I wondered what information/experience there was relating to Burn-Out and the Single Christian?

I did a Google search, and there was indeed a study that showed that singles experience a higher rate of burn-out. I won't post a link, as there are quite a few different references to the study. I'll let you all do your own research. :)

So, my question to you all is, do you experience a high level of stress and/or burn-out? Can you identify with the person who wrote the above comments? What are the factors that you think might contribute to stress and burn-out for singles?

Singles supposedly have more time and flexibility than those who are married. Is this true, or is it a misconception that ends up with expectations toward and by singles themselves that contribute to the stress and burn-out singles experience?

Am really interested in your thoughts and perspectives and observations. :)

Thanks!

Fern
