The coin flipping statement wasn't meant to be flippant.
There's a scene in Disney's Alice in Wonderland where Alice meets the Cheshire Cat at a fork in the road, and they have an exchange that goes something like this:
"Which way should I go? "
"That depends on where you're going."
"I don't know where I'm going."
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go."
If you don't know the end of a decision, or if the end is unknowable, then there is no way to measure the value of the end. If you can't measure the value, then you can't know the value. If you can't know the value, then there is no rational basis for choice, and you might as well flip a coin.
How does one measure the value of marriage vs.
celibacy?
